Eagle and Lion: Polish Poems and Scots Translations (2025)
The two nations of Scotland and Poland have much in common: an enduring national identity maintained through centuries of struggle against foreign oppression, and a deep and abiding love for the land and its people. Both countries, too, have rich, distinctive and long-established national literary traditions. The present anthology is a product of the long-standing social and cultural connections between the two countries.
The poems represent some of the greatest figures in Polish literature from the Renaissance period to our own time, and have been re-created for a new readership by a group of experienced translators drawing on the abundant resources of the Scots tongue.
The poets include Elżbieta Drużbacka (1698-1765), Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855), Maria Konopnicka (1842-1910), Julian Tuwin (1894-1953), Czesław Miłosz (1911-2004) and Ewa Lipska (1945-).
The translators are Lilian Anderson, Sheena Blackhall, John Coutts, Kenneth Farrow, Tom Hubbard, Alexander Hutchison, Derrick McClure, David Malcolm, Frances Robson and Sydney Goodsir Smith.
